Andy Murray Shocks Sinner To Reach Stockholm Quarters

Locker Room

November 10, 2021

Andy Murray described his surprising victory over world number ten Jannik Sinner as his best win of the season.

In terms of the way he moved, it probably was.

Sinner is only twenty years old and should have outlasted the British veteran in the baseline dog-fights.

Instead it was Murray who usually emerged superior.

And the way his feet helped him into position as he chased down deep and testing drives into either corner was wondrous to watch.

This stunning 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 victory is extraordinary when you consider all Andy has been through.

And now we can expect to enjoy the very best of Andy Murray at Wimbledon 2022!

No wonder he was so proud of his performance.

Murray said: ‘It was a very tough match with lots of baseline rallies and it was probably my best win this season.

‘I want to keep it going now. If I want to move back up the rankings and have good runs in tournaments I need to win these matches.’

‘It’s good to start if I’m winning more and now I’m in the quarters and I want to have a deep run here.’

Could Murray win a tournament two years after he won his last in Antwerp? It’s a distinct possibility if he stays fresh for the rest of this absorbing Stockholm Open.

But Andy is also looking towards a longer-term climb up the rankings once more

He explained: ‘I think I still have a lot to offer. I’m still able to compete and win matches against people who are in the top ten in the world.

‘If my body stays good and I keep my form I believe I can get right up there again.’

Of course there are no guarantees in sport. Murray acknowledged: ‘I do want a longer term view on things but I’m also aware that another injury could mean the end, so I want to enjoy every week.’

But all the signs are good for Andy Murray right now. He seems to be getting fitter with every passing week.

He wants to go deep in Stockholm and that in itself would be remarkable.

But what Andy Murray really wants is to go deep at Wimbledon 2022.

Imagine the Centre Court crowds cheering their favourite in the final stages of Wimbledon once more!

With every match he wins, Andy brings that dream closer to becoming a reality.

For now of course it is one match at a time. And he has a quarter-final to prepare for against a spirited American called Tommy Paul.

Andy commented: ‘He has done well in the second half of the year and he had a very good win against Taylor Fritz today. I like his game and I’m looking forward to the match.’

And we’re looking forward to seeing Andy Murray at Wimbledon 2022.
