Andy Murray In Fresh Epic As British Tennis Mania Builds
Locker Room
October 20, 2021
Andy Murray has just played one of the most dramatic three-set thrillers of his entire career.
We should have known that Murray couldn’t be upstaged by his title-winning compatriots for long!
Cameron Norrie has just triumphed at Indian Wells.
And new superstar Emma Raducanu recently shocked the world to take the US Open.
Now Murray has saved two match points in a marathon cliff-hanger against Frances Tiafoe at the European Open.
His immense will to win carried the day 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (10-8).
The Antwerp audience were on the edge of their seats for some three hours and 45 minutes.
The toughest moment came when Andy was staring down the barrel of a gun at 7-8 in the deciding breaker. But he didn’t lose another point!
It was the perfect response to the biggest test and must have delighted his millions of fans back home.
Even Murray couldn’t remember anything like it. He said: ‘I think that’s the first time in my career I’ve played a 7-6, 6-7, 7-6. I don’t think I’ve ever played a match like that.
‘I think it’s the longest three-set match I’ve played by a distance. I’m tired, obviously. It was an unbelievable battle.
‘I don’t mind playing long matches but that was taking it to another level.’
Diego Schwartzman – the Argentine recently swept aside by Norrie at Indian Wells – is up next for the brave Scot.
This tournament holds a special place in Murray’s heart because he won the event in 2019 after being side-lined for so long with hip problems.
Now he is showing genuine signs that his physical issues are finally behind him and his best form is returning in good time for next summer.
