Andy Murray isn’t normally a man for wild predictions.
After dealing with all the frustration of injury, operations and recovery, he is a supreme realist.
So when Murray says he still believes he can win Wimbledon 2021, it’s time to sit up and take notice.
This is an extraordinary claim on the face of it. After all, Andy wasn’t expected to go particularly deep in Miami this week, even before he had to pull out with a groin injury.
But Murray loves nothing more than to prove people wrong. He also sees the big picture. And everything is ultimately geared towards success at Wimbledon 2021.
In an extraordinary interview with Prime Video, Andy’s key message had the tennis world buzzing.
Murray said: ‘I want to be on the courts at Wimbledon and feeling like I have a chance of winning the event.
‘I’m aware that would be extremely tough. But I do genuinely believe it’s possible.
‘I need weeks and months of training and practising and matches and good health. But I do feel like it’s possible.
‘I’m sure some people will think I’m delusional and that my best days are behind me and everything – which may be the case.
‘But I feel I can compete with the best players in the biggest tournaments.’
There were times when he looked every bit as good as the brilliant Andrey Rublev during a defeat in Rotterdam. He admitted at the time that he should have won the first set to seize the momentum.
Andy had already beaten Robin Haase there. Training with some of the biggest names gave Murray further encouragement.
He reflected: ‘There were some good signs at the end of the match with Haase and in the first set against Rublev. But I need to do that for an hour-and-a-half or two hours. Not just twenty or thirty minutes here and there.’
‘Hopefully that will come with matches and also being around the top players more. That was the really good thing in Rotterdam.
‘Before the tournament there, I got to practise with Stefanos Tsitsipas and Borna Coric.
‘It is different. It’s a different level, speed of ball and stuff. I did well in the practices and competed well, but it took me a little bit of time to feel comfortable at that level.’
Murray wants to play as much as he can with top stars once he is fit again. His enthusiasm and self-belief will not be dampened, despite the latest setback.
He truly believes the right stepping stones will take him to Wimbledon 2021 fully match fit and dangerous to the favourites.
A third Wimbledon title for Andy Murray? Never write him off.
