So we have the dream final after all! Djokovic v Federer.
It’s mouthwatering. It’s historic. It might even defy time. Who would want to miss it? The atmosphere is building already, the sense of anticipation palpable. For a very different reason, this could be even better than last year. Of course it was special to see the Brit triumph on his own turf. But to see Roger Federer, one of the greatest sportsmen of all time, win Wimbledon again after he had been written off due to his advancing years….well, that would simply top the lot.
Many of us thought the young guns might signal a changing of the guard on semi-finals day. Roger and Novak had other ideas.Djokovic realised that Grigor Dimitrov wasn’t quite ready for the biggest stage after all.
Roger’s clinical execution of a game plan to beat Milos Raonic showed the game’s magician hasn’t lost his touch.
To do it in three, to save his energy yet again…that’s what makes it really interesting. Federer should have plenty left in the tank for Sunday.
Meanwhile Djokovic has reached the final without ever being truly convincing this summer. So could we have the romantic ending, the one which will move most of us to tears, and in all probability Roger Federer too?
It is more than possible. Of course, Djokovic is number one seed for a reason. He is hurting, he has lost his recent Grand Slam finals and he will be desperate to bring the older man to a standstill.
Novak must be favourite.
Yet Federer will be even more hungry. The chance to win an eighth Wimbledon, an eighteenth Grand Slam…to taste it again. He is craving that winning feelng at the biggest tournament of all.
Roger knows this could be his last chance. He will fight like a lion.
Remember before the tournament, when we said that Federer’s campaign could make this Wimbledon very special indeed?
Sunday is simply unmissable. We all crave the opportunity to say: “I was there when the All-Time-Great of Tennis did it one last time.”‘
A story to tell the grandchildren. One to savour for the rest of our days.
If you find Roger v Novak as irresistible as we do, call us now…
