Andy Murray has had a hip operation in Melbourne and is aiming to be back in time for Wimbledon 2018.
This is amazing news when many were starting to write off his career completely.
Wimbledon tennis fans will be reassured that the home hero isn’t going to rush his comeback.
But he will do everything to be fit for the big one.
Murray explained: ‘My plan is to be back playing around the grass-court season – potentially before then – but I’m certainly not going to rush anything.
‘When I come back, I want to know that I’m ready.’
The bonus is that Andy could be super-fresh for Wimbledon 2018, rather like Roger Federer was for the Australian Open he won this time last year.
It seems that the trip to Australia was worthwhile after all – because the surgery couldn’t have gone better.

‘The surgeon felt that my hip will be feeling better than it did a year ago. Obviously I was doing fine a year ago. I was ranked number one in the world.
‘I made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon when I literally couldn’t walk and was in so much pain.
‘So if I can get myself back to 95% of my best, I believe that’s enough to compete at the highest level, no question.
SPRINT
‘The rest of my body feels fantastic. I feel really, really good physically apart from this one issue. The surgery allows me to extend my hip well, and I’ll be able to sprint.
‘I’ll be playing a reduced schedule and focusing on trying to win major events rather than the rankings.’
Again, that means Murray should be in peak shape for Wimbledon 2018.
OPTIMISTIC
‘I’m very optimistic about the future. The surgeon is very happy about how it went.’
And that means Wimbledon 2018 tennis fans can be happy too.
The home-grown hero should be ready to shine once more at the tournament he has already won twice!

It’s too early to say. But just to be able to talk in those terms after the recent retirement fears is an incredible development for the better.
Murray sounds very confident he will be able to star at Wimbledon 2018. And that’s good enough for us.
