Counting Down to Wimbledon 2017 – Our Infographic Shows How Wimbledon Has Evolved Over The Years!

Wimbledon

May 3, 2017

Wimbledon 2017 promises to be truly special – and it has been a long time in the making, as this Infographic from Wimbledon Debenture Holders shows.

We’ve come far since the inaugural Wimbledon Championships in 1877, when the Gentleman’s Singles was the only event held, and the final was played in front of about 200 spectators.‎ Now the lucky thousands flock to Wimbledon from all over the world to be part of the latest chapter in a glorious history.

Not that Wimbledon has stood still over the years. The new No1 Court opened in 1997 to give Wimbledon another sparkling area in its own right. Centre Court’s retractable roof was in place for the 2009 Championships and has contributed to some thrilling occasions ever since.

Moving with the times, Wimbledon has embraced the digital age, with social media and video content increasingly a feature of online coverage. But nothing beats being there. Just ask spectators from last year’s tournament, who were treated to some of the finest tennis seen in years.

The sun shone as home favourite Andy Murray picked up his second Wimbledon title, paving the way for him to make it to world number one by the end of the year. He became the first Brit to do so since computerised rankings began in 1973, overtaking Novak Djokovic for the first time.‎

Serena Williams was crowned queen of Wimbledon once more, but now who will be the 2017 women’s champion?

‎The men’s game in 2017 has been set alight by the greatest and most popular of them all, Roger Federer. The Fed has defied time to launch a fresh bid to become world number one. Can he achieve his ultimate dream and conquer Wimbledon once more? With Rafa Nadal also back to form and already featuring in big 2017 finals, we’re in for a real treat.

And the charismatic new kids on the block, headed by Australian bad-boy Nick Kyrgios, are itching for a break-through, making for a mouthwatering Wimbledon 2017.

The Wimbledon 2017 Championships will be held from Monday 3rd July to Sunday 16th July. Have you missed out on this year’s ballot?
