Alex De Minaur Defeats Wimbledon Hero Arthur Fery in Thriller

Locker Room

August 18, 2026

Alex de Minaur let out a roar of defiance when he was still a point from victory.

The Australian knew his own stubborn streak had finally paid off in a Cincinnati thriller.

Somehow Katie Boulter’s husband had thwarted the comeback of Wimbledon hero Arthur Fery. At 6-3 in the breaker, the battle was all but won.

You could have forgiven Alex for thinking he was far from safe, even then.

After all, he had squandered a 5-1 lead in the second set, as the new British star won five games in a row.

And Fery’s excellent tie-break record meant that nothing was certain in this extraordinary match.

Alex de Minaur and Arthur Fery will bring fresh passion to Wimbledon 2027 next year – and their respective matches are never short of drama.

In Cincinnati, de Minaur was able to serve out what had become a veritable thriller – just as he had stayed solid to turn the tide and force the breaker in the first place.

But Arthur Fery had answered a few questions by the end of this rollercoaster ride. And he had silenced the doubters. Could he make his mark beyond the home grass of Wimbledon, they had wondered. You bet he could!

And we look forward to seeing whether the new best Brit can find some momentum at Flushing Meadows when the US Open starts at the end of the month.

Speaking after his 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory over entertaining Fery, de Minaur said: ‘I’m happy that I found a way. It was tough at the end. Probably a little bit harder than it should have been.

‘I played a good match until the last rain delay. And then I had to dig deep. I had to kind of reset and take one point at a time.

‘I take confidence out of these types of tough wins. Hopefully every day I feel better and play better.’

And Fery can take confidence from this precious experience in America too. He had beaten one Australian – the unpredictable James Duckworth – in another thriller in the previous match.

And although Arthur was clearly frustrated by his dip during the all-important breaker against de Minaur, he will take confidence from Cincinnati too.

Alex de Minaur and Arthur Fery will march on to the US Open at the end of the month feeling hopeful. And we can’t wait to see them at Wimbledon 2027 too.
