Jannik Sinner Won’t Rely on Sascha Zverev’s Inferiority Complex

Jannik Sinner knows Alexander Zverev has changed. But does Zverev feel enough self-belief to shake off his previously defeatist mindset against the world’s best?
Before they played their Madrid final couple of months ago, Zverev pretty much determined his own fate there.
He whined: ‘He’s world number one and hasn’t lost since the beginning of February. I didn’t beat him the last eight times.’
Sascha’s losing streak against Jannik quickly became nine, to no one’s surprise. But that was before Sinner wilted at Roland Garros and Sascha subsequently won his first major there.
Jannik Sinner against Sascha Zverev in this Wimbledon 2026 final could be a better contest than many people think.
Zverev is unleashing a ridiculous force right now, due to his new inner confidence and relaxation. He disposed of Britain’s Arthur Fery in their semi-final with utter ruthlessness.
You could say the same about Sinner’s 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Novak Djokovic, the greatest of all time. At no stage did imperious Jannik look particularly troubled.
But the Italian knows he will be facing a new Zverev on Sunday, a threat more substantial than Djokovic. And that realisation could prove the key.
Sinner said of Sascha’s first major victory: ‘When you finally achieve it, it’s amazing. Then it gives you this confidence boost.
‘He was a tough player to play against before, and now even more so – because of the confidence he has. He is playing incredible tennis.’
Zverev doesn’t disagree. He explained: ‘When you win a major, you know how to do it and you feel like you can do it again. You have this feeling inside of you.
‘The second thing is, I feel like I worked on my game a lot and it has improved. It’s as simple as that.’
If Sacha can play with complete freedom and simplicity of thought, he has a real chance at last against his nemesis.
Jannik Sinner against Sascha Zverev could be a fascinating psychological battle on Centre Court on Sunday.
The defending champion will go all out to impose himself on Zverev early. ‘Yes you won Roland Garros but I’m still better than you – and you know it.’
That will be the demon that the favourite will try to re-establish in the underdog’s head. But if Sascha can finally shake off that inferiority complex, he could cause an upset.
Today we have the “Czech Mate Final” – Karolina Muchova versus Linda Noskova. And again that’s a fascinating match-up and clash of career stages.
Experienced Muchova would be a very popular Wimbledon champion. Her good nature shines through, even when she is at her gladiatorial best.
But there is something nerveless about young Noskova that makes her a very dangerous opponent indeed.
We shall see how it all unfoilds!
