Jannik Sinner Gets Career Slam Boost after Shock Daniil Medvedev Exit
Roland Garros
May 27, 2026
Jannik Sinner almost had it all his own way at Roland Garros. Only in the closing stages did he start to make the kind of mistakes that are normal for other human beings.
Frenchman Clement Tabur was therefore able to save three match points on his own serve, to the delight of the noisy crowd on Philippe-Chatrier.
It only temporarily delayed Sinner’s inevitable 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 victory, though. And the next challenge for Jannik is a second-round showdown with Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina.
Jannik Sinner is likely to arrive at Wimbledon 2026 with a precious Career Slam safely in the bag.
It will get tougher for the favourite as Roland Garros progresses, of course. But the early elimination of one dangerman only appears to increase Sinner’s sense of comfort.
The flamboyant Danill Medvedev is capable of beating anyone on his day. But the Russian became involved in an unseemly marital spat during the first set of his match against Australian underdog Adam Walton.
As Medvedev seemed to wilt in the heat, his wife Daria said: ‘It’s hot for everybody. Everybody is suffering. You need to behave!’
Medvedev replied: ‘When I start finding the court I’ll start to behave.’
And he did – but without the required consistency. To everyone’s surprise, Walton emerged an incredible 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 winner.
Although that upset merely reinforces the reality that anything can happen in tennis, it also strengthens Sinner’s already-secure position.
Jannik Sinner might struggle to maintain his psychological and emotional intensity for Wimbledon 2026 if he has just made his Career Slam dream come true in Paris, though.
And that would make for the delicious possibility of a surprise winner on the beautifully manicured grass at the All England Club.
Sinner will argue that he can keep winning indefinitely now. But the temptation to see him as superhuman creates a myth that will be exploded sooner or later.
