Cameron Norrie faces the ultimate test in tennis when he steps out next time in Madrid.
The understated British star has only ever played Jannik Sinner in practice matches. And Cam admits the world number one has quietly wiped the floor with him behind the scenes.
But Norrie has nothing to lose – and will hope he is lucky enough to meet Sinner on an off-day for the Italian.
Cameron Norrie will certainly learn from this experience as Wimbledon 2026 approaches.
And the 30-year-old will relish the opportunity to test his skills against Sinner in a competitive setting.
He said: ‘I’m excited to play him. But every time we practise, he rips me up. He’s probably the most confident player in tennis right now.
‘But I just need to play my game. He’ll be tough to play against but I’m excited for it.’
Jannik is on a 19-match winning streak. But if he causes an unlikely upset, Cam’s reward will be to reach the Madrid quarter-finals for the first time.
Another showdown in the Spanish capital has already captured the imagination. The two hottest teenagers in tennis right now thrilled the crowds in Madrid.
In the end, new sensation Rafael Jodar defeated Brazilian favourite Joao Fonseca 7-6, (7-4), 4-6, 6-1.
And it was no mean feat for Jodar to tame the South American’s booming forehand – much to the delight of the noisy locals.
Jodar becomes only the eighth teenager to reach the last 16 in Madrid. And the quarters beckon if he can send Czech outsider Vit Kopriva packing next.
Meanwhile Coco Gauff overcame sickness and distress to defeat Sorana Cirstea 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. At one point it looked as though Coco would have to retire – but she battled on.
Cameron Norrie, Jannik Sinner, Rafael Jodar and Coco Gauff will all be determined to make a big impression at Wimbledon 2026.
