Tommy Paul and Jessica Pegula Win Titles on American Clay

Tommy Paul saved three match points in Houston to win his first title since 2024.
The former Wimbledon quarter-finalist is showing his best fighting spirit once more.
He won the Queen’s Club title in London two years ago to shock the tennis world.
Tommy Paul might just be showing the kind of form that could help him to go deep again at Wimbledon 2026 too!
Before the grass, first the clay. The beautiful little Houston stadium – loved by Paul because ‘you all dress so smart’ – creates a charming attraction for American stars at the start of the clay court season.
But the man who was on the verge of winning this particular Houston title three times on Sunday was not from the USA.
Roman Andres Burruchaga is an Argentine who had just won a title in South America on the Challenger circuit.
This potential Houston success would have been a massive follow-up on the main ATP Tour. He just had to find that final piece of magic.
Confident Burruchaga seemed to have Tommy beaten at 5-3 in the deciding set. Three times he was just one last shot from glory.
In the end the underdog was left fighting back the tears as defiant Paul stormed back to save three match points and delight the home crowd with his 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 victory.
And after everyone had caught their breath, the American hero complimented his compatriot spectators.
Paul said: ‘We always comment on how everyone is so well dressed here.
‘We love coming here. It makes us feel special when you guys dress up and come and watch us.’
Tommy Paul could be saying exactly the same about Wimbledon 2026 in a few months’ time. He just loves the All England Club elegance too!
And it’s about time Jessica Pegula launched a sustained challenge on grass as well. But for now she will be encouraged by her start to the early summer on clay.
Pegula had it much easier than Paul. She defeated Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-2, 6-2 in the Charleston final.
That made Jess the first woman to score back-to-back titles in Charleston since the great Serena Williams.
But the Slams are what the best players really want. And the European summer is all about the French Open and then the ultimate in sporting status…Wimbledon 2026.
Come and watch your favourite players at Wimbledon 2026! Tommy and Jess will be just two of an army of American stars on show.
