Carlos Alcaraz Faces the Local Hero at the Australian Open
Australian Open

Carlos Alcaraz faces a tough test on Tuesday as Melbourne gets ready to turn up the heat in more than one sense.
It’s not just Australia’s summer temperatures that threaten to be oppressive. Jannik Sinner learned all about those when he wilted and almost had to retire during his last match.
But Alcaraz has to contend with something else when he plays his big quarter-final.
His opponent is Australian hero Alex de Minaur. And that means the crowd will make it as hot for Carlitos as they possibly can.
Carlos Alcaraz against Jack Draper on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2026 would be the equivalent in about six months.
And the world number one has the added pressure of going in search of his Career Slam in Melbourne. The Australian Open is the only major he hasn’t won.
Standing in his way next time out is an adversary in sparkling form. De Minaur – who is about to marry Britain’s Katie Boulter – just downed the man many considered to be a dark horse for Aussie Open glory.
The home favourite defeated Alexander Bublik 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. He seemed to do it with amazing ease too, winning in just 92 minutes.
Everything seemed to ping off his racquet in the sweetest way. And De Minaur won’t fear the next test.
He said: ‘I think the last two matches I’ve played, I’ve hit the ball extremely well. I’m super pleased with my level.
‘I feel like I’m doing everything I want on the court – and I’m excited for the next one. That’s going to be a big one, right?
‘So I’m going to have to come out here guns blazing! I’m excited for a battle against Carlitos.’
Alcaraz reached the quarters with his own convincing victory, beating Tommy Paul 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, 7-5.
Carlos Alcaraz is massive box office – and we can’t wait to see his speed, power and skill at Wimbledon 2026!
