Emma Navarro has completed an amazing hat-trick with her third-set demolition of the great Iga Swiatek.
The Pole was number one seed in China – but she just couldn’t close out the big games when it mattered.
In fact Swiatek made no fewer than 70 unforced errors against the billionaire’s daughter – mostly hitting far and wide.
That’s not to say Emma wasn’t piling on the pressure with some gutsy hitting when five of the last six games reached deuce.
Incredibly it was the American who came out on top every single time it came to a test of nerve. She ran out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 winner.
‘I’m really pleased to be through to the quarter-finals,’ Navarro said in a pretty matter-of-fact way. But then it’s not entirely unusual for her to beat a world number two.
She just added Swiatek to the list after beating Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka in the past. Could she shock us at Wimbledon next time out?
Navarro often looks comfortable on grass, too. She isn’t overawed by the historic atmosphere on Wimbledon’s Centre Court.
Emma Navarro could be about to mature into the kind of player who could seriously challenge for the Wimbledon 2026 title.
You could say the same about young Sonay Kartal, after she pulled off a massive shock of her own to reach the last eight in the Far East.
The plucky Brit just saw off Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to progress to the business end of the China Open.
‘My biggest win and the best tennis I’ve payed,’ she admitted later.
British tennis has yet another new star. Kartal will join Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper in the hearts of the home fans at the biggest Grand Slam of them all.
Emma Navarro and Sonay Kartal look likely to become two of the great entertainers at Wimbledon 2026.
And who would bet against another classic final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner on beautiful Centre Court?
The last two Wimbledon champions have just struck gold again on the other side of the world.
Sinner won the China Open with a relatively straightforward final against young American Learner Tien.
The Italian was always in charge and romped home 6-2, 6-2 to show why he is so highly respected the world over.
And Alcaraz has just won the Japan Open, before he opted to take a breather to rest and recover.
We can’t wait to welcome back all the great champions and young pretenders at Wimbledon 2026!
