Novak Djokovic Defies Time to Face Carlos Alcaraz in Semis
US Open
September 3, 2025
Novak Djokovic has made more tennis history by reaching the US Open semi-finals.
By beating Taylor Fritz in four sets, the 38-year-old became the oldest player in the Open era to reach all four Grand Slam semi-finals in a season.
Novak has achieved that extraordinary quartet a magnificent seven times in his career overall.
He has now reached more major semi-finals than any man or woman alive – 53 to Chris Evert’s 52. And to have done that in 80 attempts leaves his 66.25% success rate head and shoulders above the rest.
His big-time consistency this year means Novak is now ranked fourth in the world – and lies third in the ATP race. Incredible numbers when you consider he barely plays outside the Slams these days.
Novak Djokovic continues to make a mockery of his age. At this rate he might even compete as a serious contender at Wimbledon 2026!
We never expected to be entertaining that possibility at such an advanced stage in Novak’s career. But the fire is still in his belly.
Look how he took on the crowd on a packed Arthur Ashe as they cheered his faults and tried to goad him.
Look how he saved countless break points to fight his way out of a hole when the going got tough – five in the first-set clincher alone!
Fritz salvaged some pride by taking the third set and saving two match points with defiant rallying. But Djokovic was always the likely winner – and closed out convincingly 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6.4.
That leaves fuel in the tank to face Alcaraz. And despite losing two Wimbledon finals to the Spaniard, Novak enjoys a 5-3 head-to-head record against the much younger man.
Carlitos dismissed Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 with apparent ease. The Czech admitted: ‘Whenever I had a chance, he came up with something special.
‘Even when I didn’t play badly, he always found solutions. That was sometimes devastating.’
The Serb knows what that feels like after losing those two Wimbledon finals to Alcaraz. Could this be different, as it was in Australia?
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz could even do battle again on Centre Court when it comes to Wimbledon 2026!
