Tommy Paul Scores Home Victory in Typical US Open Drama

US Open

August 29, 2025

Tommy Paul gave the New York die-hards on Arthur Ashe the epic win they had stayed up so late to see.

With the clock threatening to flick from 1.46am to 1.47am, the American battler summoned one last piece of agility and skill.

How he did so after four hours and twenty-four minutes of incredible action was a testament to the 28-year-old’s fitness and determination.

Tommy Paul will likely produce similar physical feats at Wimbledon 2026. He was a quarter-finalist on grass two years ago.

But this match point in the Big Apple was one for the ages – and everything the loyal spectators deserved.

As his opponent Nuno Borges rushed the net to defend himself, Paul whipped a tough return straight at him.

The Portuguese shaped for an instinctive volley which struck the net and dropped on Tommy’s side. Match point saved. Or so we thought.

With stunning speed, Paul not only reached the ball. He angled a deft and dangerous reply to Borges’ left.

Still the underdog found a way to send Tommy scrambling to the back of the court in pursuit another potential winner.

Somehow Paul found the necessary venom on the turn to overpower Borges once and for all. It was over.

Tommy Paul called these scenes ‘crazy’ afterwards. But five-set thrillers are the matches we’ll savour most at Wimbledon 2026 too.

Back in New York, all the big names are still in the mix at this intriguing US Open – at least they are at the time of writing.

Jannik Sinner cruised through to join deadly rival Carlos Alcaraz in the next round. Novak Djokovic is still there and preparing to play Britain’s Cam Norrie.

Alexander Zverev, who defeated the other surviving Brit, Jacob Fearnley is still dreaming of a Grand Slam trophy at long last.

Among the women, a tearful Coco Gauff overcame her familiar, nagging service problems to fight again. Meanwhile Iga Swiatek dropped a set but went through and Aryna Sabalenka won too.

We look forward to the rest of the drama at the US Open – the final Grand Slam of this amazing tennis year. But we are looking further ahead too.

Wimbledon 2026 will be the biggest major of them all next year. That’s why so many Americans will cross the Atlantic to enjoy the classy British welcome.
