First Brits to Win Wimbledon Men’s Doubles Title for 89 Years

Wimbledon

July 12, 2025

First Brits to win the men’s doubles at Wimbledon since 1936. Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool are the only all-British pair to achieve the feat in the last 89 years.

‘When you say it like that, it sounds incredible,’ Glasspool reflected. ‘Two Brits together! We’ve given you one over the last couple of years. Now we’re giving you two, so we did our best.’

And their best was good enough against Rinky Hijikata in David Pel in Saturday’s dramatic final.

Things might have got a little edgy in the second set. But British nerves held firm for a spectacular 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory to spark patriotic celebrations at the All England Club.

First Brits for the best part of a century to win the men’s title together. That really was something to savour for the home crowds.

Of course, on the day the achievement will inevitably have been overshadowed by the astonishingly destructive display of Iga Swiatek as she seized glory in the women’s singles final.

But Cash and Glasspool won’t mind being upstaged on their big day. They know what they have done. And so does everyone else inside tennis.

After such a dominant season, they had so much to lose – and only they knew what they went through to fulfil expectations.

Cash explained: ‘We’ve played a crazy amount of tennis on grass. There was a lot of pressure on our shoulders.

‘It means the world. Our team backed us all the way. To do it here is incredible.’

First Brits. But they always had each other. It makes you appreciate the huge pressure on Andy Murray’s shoulders in years gone by. And on Jack Draper’s shoulders now.

To win any Wimbledon title is an extraordinary achievement for any home players. To be able to enjoy this triumph together will make it extra special for Cash and Glasspool.

Two other men will come together on Sunday to make Centre Court go wild. But they will be on opposite sides of the net.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will thrill the world when they do tennis combat in the men’s final. Will you be there?
