Carlos Alcaraz apologised to the Roman crowd for beating Jannik Sinner at his home tournament.
The Spaniard couldn’t help being so brilliant, of course. He couldn’t make unforced errors just to please the locals. In fact he made precious few all final.
Alcaraz wasn’t about to take the sting out of that wounding forehand either. Not when it was working such a treat.
The first set could have gone either way. But Jannik had no complaints about the eventual 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 score-line
Sinner often seems to bring the very best out of Carlitos. Even when the Italian had two set points in the opener, Alcaraz was able to summon his A-game to escape.
Carlos Alcaraz will feel confident he can beat Jannik Sinner if they come up against each other on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2025 as well.
But would the champion really have it all his own way? There is a counter-argument. One that doesn’t make Sinner quite the outsider he might seem for Wimbledon glory.
The Italian Open was Jannik’s first tournament back after three months off court. And yet he still nearly won it.
Sinner suffered from blisters and tweaks. And yet he still had those two set points to take the opener 7-5.
True, he ran out of steam in the second set – and Alcaraz realised he could run riot. The Roman crowd fell silent as their favourite was put to the sword.
But Sinner will be stronger for the French Open. By the time he reaches the business end of that major, he will feel he is back in his stride.
Yet Roland Garros might still come a little early on the comeback trail for the finely-tuned Italian.
The next Grand Slam could be a different story, though. That’s where freshness will be more of a determining force than ring-rust.
And Sinner will be fresher than most. He will also be hungry to win his first Wimbledon title. No one will particularly expect it – a rare treat for the best in the world.
