Jack Draper Through to Play Tommy Paul in Last Sixteen
Locker Room
April 30, 2025
Jack Draper turned his back on his opponent and didn’t even know it was over.
The brilliant Englishman had just sent a crushing forehand past Matteo Berrettini to seal the first-set breaker by a convincing 7-2.
Draper was changing a sweat-soaked wrist band when he sensed the big man nearby.
The Italian knew his own body – and he had decided there was no further chance of progressing.
With Jack in this kind of form, success was probably beyond Matteo anyway in truth. He had met his match.
Jack Draper’s season has already been so exciting that the tennis world can’t wait to see what he can achieve at his home Grand Slam – Wimbledon 2025.
Anything is possible now for the Indian Wells champion. But first there is the European clay to negotiate – and his initial thoughts were for Berrettini.
The Londoner explained: ‘He said his abs were pulling. I believe he might have done it in his last match.
‘It’s always tough to see a friend having an injury. I know how it feels. I wish him all the best. He’s a great guy.’
Now Draper’s thoughts will turn to the threat of Tommy Paul, who has defeated the dangerous Brazilian Joao Fonseca and then Karen Khachanov to set up this showdown.
The fiery Brit leads the head-to-head 3-2 against the popular American. But this match will provide a stern test for the younger man.
Jack Draper and Tommy Paul are likely to go deep at Wimbledon 2025 as well.
It was only last year that Paul reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals after winning Queen’s and beating Draper along the way.
So this clash in Madrid could be an interesting precursor to what might turn out to be a more significant meeting at the All England Club.
