Novak Djokovic continues to rewrite the record books in the twilight of his career.
The inimitable Serb has now overtaken Rafael Nadal’s total of 410 ATP Masters 1000 wins.
Djokovic made it 411 victories when he defeated Ugo Carabelli in Miami. He stifled the underdog’s comeback with a typically ruthless breaker to seal the deal 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).
Novak said: ‘I’m honoured to have another milestone and another record broken. There’s always something on the line pretty much every time I play. That motivates me to do well at tournaments.’
Novak Djokovic would dearly love to round off his extraordinary career with a 25th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon 2025.
That would take him clear of Margaret Court and make him the undisputed greatest tennis player of all time – although most would already hand him that accolade.
For now, Djokovic may be sensing his opportunity to take a 100th ATP Tour title over in Florida.
Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz and Indian Wells victor Jack Draper have already been eliminated. Jannik Sinner is serving a ban, of course.
Novak Djokovic could conceivably win Miami if he conserves his energy by sticking to straight sets triumphs.
Meanwhile Emma Raducanu is enjoying a marvellous run in Miami too. She reached the last sixteen by defeating McCartney Kessler in what turned out to be a 6-1, 3-0 walkover.
Emma takes on the dangerous American, Amanda Anisimova next time out. But the Brit is full of confidence and will hope to maintain momentum.
Sadly Australian Open champion Madison Keys has lost her own momentum. But that stutter meant a dream day for Alexandra Eala, a teenager from the Philippines.
She pulled off the shock of the tournament with a 6-4, 6-2 wonder show in the sunshine. No doubt Madison will be back with a bang before we know it.
Novak Djokovic, Emma Raducanu and Madison Keys will all be desperate to make a big impression at Wimbledon 2025.
