Jack Draper and Mirra Andreeva Are Champions of Indian Wells
Indian Wells
March 17, 2025
Jack Draper savoured the moment with a quiet smile that told the world he belonged in the big time.
Winning Indian Wells rocketed Draper up to world number seven. With every match, the awesome Brit seems to bring himself closer to Grand Slam glory.
The US Open semi-finalist last year didn’t have the stature of this champion in the desert. Now the 23-year-old is the real deal.
What a journey for the young man who wanted to stop a couple of years ago, or else go back to the Challenger Tour – because he didn’t feel he had what it took to succeed at the very top of tennis.
Jack Draper now has every chance of making a serious bid for the title at Wimbledon 2025.
He has acquired a ruthlessness and self-assurance that simply wasn’t there even a few short months ago.
The Englishman’s 6-2, 6-2 victory over Holger Rune in the showpiece was every bit as one-sided as the score-line suggests.
Draper didn’t let his opponent play. There were no weaknesses to his game – and his focus was absolute.
Jack said later: ‘I’m just so grateful and happy to be out here to play, with my body feeling healthy and feeling great in my mind.
”All the work I’ve done over the last few years. It feels like it’s all coming together on the big stage.’
Jack Draper knows there is no bigger stage than Wimbledon 2025. And his home Grand Slam is surely the one he wants to win above all.
No tournament is too great for a player who realises he has hit a new level this year – and has finally lost that feeling of being an impostor at the top.
‘I feel like I deserve it,’ he said significantly. And that should send an ominous message to the rest of the tennis world.
Meanwhile Mirra Andreeva also felt she deserved her stunning success against Aryna Sabalenka.
The seventeen-year-old held her nerve after a ferocious Sabalenka start – and came storming back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Andreeva plays every shot in the game with a crisp confidence – and displays a defence worthy of Novak Djokovic in his prime.
‘Finally, I’d like to say thanks to me,’ the youngster said amusingly in her victory speech. ‘I was running around like a rabbit because Aryna was sending bullets and I was trying to keep up.
‘Thanks to me because I played a little part in my victory too.’
