Novak Djokovic Sets New Record with Andy Murray at His Side

Australian Open

January 15, 2025

Novak Djokovic has beaten Roger Federer yet again.

The much-loved Swiss stopped playing a while ago. And so this wasn’t a fresh victory in direct tennis combat. But it must have been satisfying nonetheless.

The imperious Serb has now played an incredible 430 Grand Slam matches – surpassing Federer’s open era tally of 429.

And of course Novak had already eclipsed Federer’s Grand Slam title total a while back to rewrite the history books.

There will be more Grand Slam matches for Novak after he saw off the young Portuguese, Jaime Faria 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2.

Novak Djokovic will also surely play Wimbledon 2025 in order to enjoy the famous grass courts one last time.

But for now that new record of 430 big-time battles was something to savour in Melbourne.

Djokovic said: ‘I love this court and try to give my best every time. It’s been over twenty years trying to compete in Grand Slams.

‘Win or lose, I always leave my heart out on the court. When I was a kid, the first memory I have is watching Wimbledon finals.

‘Grand Slams are the ones that motivate kids. I’m just blessed to be making records still.’

Andy Murray was a calm presence in Novak’s camp for the landmark occasion, wearing a grey cap and black shirt and looking uncharacteristicly clean cut.

The Scot offered quiet advice during a trying phase of the contest – and Djokovic nodded appreciatively.

Novak Djokovic coached by Andy Murray is a partnership we’d love to witness at Wimbledon 2025 too!

Things won’t always run smoothly, you’d imagine. But when the Serb sounded off more angrily in Melbourne, it seemed to be aimed at other members of his circle. And the mini-crisis caused by Faria soon passed anyway.

‘I think I responded very well,’ Djokovic admitted. ‘He was playing lights-out tennis. I had to weather the storm. The future is bright for him.

‘In the words of Daniil Medvedev, “if the future generation plays this way, they’re gonna have everything. Money, girls, casinos.” I just love that statement!’

We shall have to see how much longer Novak can enjoy the limelight at the pinnacle of his sport. He doesn’t move quite like he used to. But for now the habitual winner keeps on winning.

It could be a different story if he comes up against the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, who breezed past Yoshihito Nishioka 6-0, 6-1, 6-4.

But let’s enjoy every moment of an all-time great while we still can. And is there another Djokovic-Alcaraz showdown awaiting us on Centre Court in London later this year?
