Nick Kyrgios Is Wary of Brit Threat Fearnley at Australian Open

January 10, 2025

Nick Kyrgios looks set to shake off his abdominal niggles and face a very different threat to his Australian Open campaign.

The maverick is back. And that will delight all those who enjoyed his progress to the Wimbledon final in 2022.

Nick Kyrgios is pure box office. How we would love to see him go deep again at Wimbledon 2025.

Kyrgios just admitted: ‘Every time I step out on court, I don’t know if I’m going to be super controversial in a good or bad way.’

That self-portrait sums him up perfectly. But for now the Aussie antihero is focusing on keeping his feet on the ground as he approaches the first obstacle to his Grand Slam success this year.

And that danger comes in the form of a little-known Brit called Jacob Fearnley, Nick’s first-round opponent in Melbourne on Monday.

Fearnley briefly hit the headlines when he took a set off the mighty Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last year. Since then, he has been building form and confidence without so much attention.

And Kyrgios doesn’t want any nasty surprises on home territory, as he tries to find his own feet after so long out with injury.

Bad-boy Nick paid Fearnley full respect when he explained: ‘He’s been knocking on the door with some pretty good results the last six to nine months. He’s extremely confident.

‘You’ve got to be careful with these guys. Players like me have a target on our backs. These guys go out there trying to play their best tennis. I’ve experienced that.

‘I’m not underestimating anyone in this event. Me personally, I haven’t played many tennis matches lately. I’m still trying to find my feet as well.

‘He made things pretty challenging for Novak at Wimbledon. Anyone who can do that on such a big stage has that X factor.

‘I know he’s going to embrace that challenge against me in Australia. He’s going to be good.’

Kyrgios is happy to play through his aches and pains. ‘As long as it’s not something like my wrist again, I think I can manage,’ he said.

Nick Kyrgios could hold Wimbledon 2025 spellbound later this year too. Do you have your tickets yet?
