Coco Gauff completed her glorious run at the season-ending WTA finals in typically dramatic style.
Her 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Zheng Qinwen netted Coco a total of $4.8 or £3.7 million in prize money – the most ever earned at a single event in tennis.
And if anyone deserved such massive rewards it had to be Gauff, who had defeated fearsome opponents Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka on her way to the showpiece.
Still just 20 years old, you wonder what the New Year might hold for this highly popular tennis icon.
Coco Gauff will be the one we all want to watch on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2025.
That was where she first came to our attention as a brave 15-year-old taking on and beating the adults, seemingly so long ago.
And Gauff needed her fighting spirit more than ever to complete her extraordinary run in Saudi Arabia.
She was 0-2 and 3-5 down in the final set against the Olympic champion. Coco was only two points from defeat,
But after three hours of fascinating battle, she dominated the decisive tie-break and gave us the denouement her adventure demanded.
Coco revealed later that she simply refused to contemplate defeat- no matter how ominously it hovered.
Gauff explained: ‘Sometimes you can think that – but I just pushed that thought away. I was just telling myself another point, another chance.
‘I was just trying to hang in there. I never gave up. It was a great match.’
Coco Gauff is surely going to be involved in more great matches at Wimbledon 2025. Many of us believe she can win it.
