Jack Draper Wins His First ATP 500 Title with Brave Vienna Victory

October 28, 2024
Jack Draper fell backwards onto the centre court in the Wiener Stadthalle. Ironic motion, because that very moment represented a bold step forwards.
The young Englishman had just seen the depth of his wounding backhand volley force a wayward reply from his fellow finalist Karen Khachanov.
Draper tossed away his white cap and collapsed in joyous relief. A first 500 secured along with a new world ranking of 15. But the victory meant much more than numbers.
Under intense pressure at the business end of tournaments, Jack had previously tended to crumble either psychologically or physically – often both. Not this time.
Jack Draper can now look forward to Wimbledon 2025 with all the confidence of a man capable of winning his home Grand Slam.
In Vienna, Karen Khachanov had tested Draper to the limit with a second-set comeback – coming from four games behind to lead 5-4.
The Russian had literally roared out his delight at what he foresaw for the rest of the match. He went home defeated.
Courageous Jack had absorbed the force from over the net and steeled himself for one last push. Draper won the final three games to take the match 6-4, 7-5 – and secure his second tour title.
Nearly 23, Jack’s physical and mental development is visible and admirable. It brings him into the competitive sphere of the two greats of his generation, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Draper isn’t at their stratospheric level just yet. But on his day – particularly on grass – he may be able to pull off a shock or two come the summer.
Jack Draper will go into Wimbledon 2025 knowing he can beat anyone on his day. Mind and body are unlikely to let him down.
After victory in Vienna, Jack said: ‘I’m so happy. I’m incredibly proud of myself and my team and the work we put in. It’s for moments like this.’
