Rafael Nadal displayed an admirable peace of mind as he called time on his stellar career.
Two decades at the top will come full circle when he bows out with some farewell Davis Cup action.
Then we will all be left to cherish our memories of the greatest gladiator the sport has ever seen.
We will remember above all the classic Wimbledon final of 2008 – and the descending gloom through which his skill and courage shone to defeat the seemingly immaculate Roger Federer.
Of course, we have all hoped for Rafa’s return to Wimbledon in recent times. But it wasn’t to be – and today’s news comes as no surprise at all.
Rafael Nadal won’t star at Wimbledon 2025 but his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz surely will.
And deep down Nadal knows the changing of the guard has already taken place. Alcaraz is reigning champion at Wimbledon after successive master classes at an unfeasibly tender age.
Rafa needn’t worry about leaving a vacuum when he calls it a day. He can simply reflect upon everything he has achieved and everyone he has inspired. He can enjoy a new chapter in his life with immense and hard-earned satisfaction.
Nadal said this today: ‘It’s obviously a difficult decision – one that has taken me some time to make. But in life everything has a beginning and an end.
‘I think it is the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could ever have imagined. I want to thank the entire tennis industry – all the people involved in this sport.’
No, Rafa, we thank you. For memorable battles and wonderful entertainment. For supreme sportsmanship of a calibre and charm that provided an inspirational example for the new generation.
Raf added: ‘I want to thank my long-time colleagues and especially my great rivals. I have spent many hours with them and lived many moments that I will remember for the rest of my life.’
Nadal, Federer and Djokovic. Now only Novak is left.
Looking forward to the Davis Cup final, Rafa concluded: ‘I think I’ve come full circle. One of my first great joys as a professional tennis player was the Davis Cup final in Seville in 2004.
‘I leave with the absolute peace of mind of having given my best, of having made an effort in every way. I can only end by saying a thousand thanks and see you soon.’
Rafael Nadal will always be welcome at Wimbledon in whatever capacity he chooses. Perhaps he will come to Wimbledon 2025 as a spectator. What an ovation he would receive!
