Carlos Alcaraz suddenly summoned the warrior within to keep his Wimbledon 2024 dream alive.
Just as it appeared that American underdog Frances Tiafoe would pull off a sensational victory, the reigning champion switched gear.
The result was a stunning final twist to some sensational Centre Court entertainment as Alcaraz came back from the dead to defeat Tiafoe 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Carlos Alcaraz will look to find the best of himself much earlier in contests going forward here at Wimbledon 2024.
Meanwhile American tennis fans can be proud of their man and still have so much more to cheer.
Taylor Fritz was due to do battle against Alejandro Tabilo on Saturday. Having been to the quarter-finals here before, Fritz will seek to secure his place in Week Two once more at an intriguing Wimbledon.
And Tommy Paul is still going strong on the English grass after winning the biggest pre-Slam trophy at the Queen’s Club.
He plays in the Wimbledon round of sixteen on Sunday and should feel confident of making a big impact at the business end of the most important 2024 major.
Coco Gauff is dealing admirably with the pressure of being a tournament favourite at the Championships this year.
She took out young Brit Sonay Kartal 6-4, 6-0 to set up a scintillating all-American showdown with the in-form Emma Navarro next up.
And don’t forget that Madison Keys is still in the women’s singles fight and is preparing for a tough one against French Open finalist Jasmine Paolini next.
Former US Open winner Emma Raducanu might be making all the headlines after she took down ninth seed Maria Sakkari in front of an ecstatic British public on Centre Court.
