Katie Boulter did it the hard way and Jack Draper managed it for the very first time.
But that title-winning feeling was special indeed for two Brits who can now approach the All England Club with increasing confidence.
Katie Boulter and Jack Draper can both expect to make waves at Wimbledon 2024. And that’s an exciting situation in the build-up to their home Grand Slam.
Katie Boulter achieved the seemingly impossible on Sunday. She was a set down to the more celebrated Emma Raducanu overnight after a potentially soul-destroying evening breaker,
But the local girl sent Nottingham fans wild as she stormed back to take that semi-final 6-7 (13-15), 6-3, 6-4. Yet the stamina test was only just beginning.
Having defeated a former US Open winner, Boulter had just a few hours to rest before she faced a former Wimbledon finalist in the showpiece.
And even Katie must have wondered how much she had left in the tank when the willowy Karolina Pliskova took the first set.
But Boulter is made of increasingly tough stuff. And still she refused to be denied the trophy. In fact the Super Brit saved her best until last as she took the match and the Nottingham Open title 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Katie Boulter has reached the third round of Wimbledon the last two years. She could go even further at Wimbledon 2024 on this form.
And young Jack Draper is another home-grown player absolutely smashing it at present. He just won his first career title in Stuttgart and did it in style.
Perhaps the only observer who was truly confident that the 22-year-old could come up with such a stunning 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win against Matteo Berrettini after a tricky first set was the young Englishman himself.
The new British number one explained later: ‘The power of belief, especially in tennis, is a huge thing. Being able to come and win against top players is so important.’
Jack Draper and Katie Boulter could shock a few bigger stars at Wimbledon 2024 as well.
