Mirra Andreeva Through at 17 – Women’s Quarter-Finals Thrill!

Roland Garros

June 6, 2024

Teenager Mirra Andreeva commanded our attention as the women’s quarter-finals served up three-set thrillers at Roland Garros.

We have often highlighted how women’s tennis is more than holding its own against the men for sheer entertainment value.

Wimbledon 2024 will surely show us yet again how spectacular women’s matches have become. Centre Court awaits all the drama.

Over in Paris, the fate of three French Open quarter-finals turned this way and that with a glorious unpredictability. Eventual results created gasps of excitement.

To have one seventeen-year-old in the last four – and another relative unknown facing her – is quite extraordinary.

It’s amazing to think that one of those surprise packages is going to be in their first major final too!

The only straight sets victory at the last-eight stage went to world number one Iga Swiatek. She remains the likely winner of this Roland Garros women’s tournament.

But Swiatek has struggled to be dominant on grass so far. And that will blow the Championships at Wimbledon wide open come July.

Wimbledon 2024 will bring us a fascinating women’s singles tournament full of stunning surprises.

We only need to take a look at recent events in Paris to realise how many dramatic twists and turns await lucky spectators at SW19.

Mirra Andreeva was still sixteen a few weeks ago. She might have crumbled after Aryna Sabalenka edged a dramatic first-set tie-break.

But as Sabalenka began to suffer, Andreeva stayed strong to take the contest 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4.

She will play the little-known Italian, Jasmine Paolini in the semi-finals. Almost unbelievably, Paolini stunned the former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.

Two of Wimbledon’s great crowd favourites, Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur, were involved in a typical nail-biter in their own quarter-final.

Coco recovered from a first-set reverse to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 – and now she faces tournament favourite Iga Swiatek.

The brilliant Pole was the only quarter-finalist who made relatively light work of her match, thrashing the reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova 6-0, 6-2.

No wonder Swiatek is overwhelmingly tipped to triumph at Roland Garros yet again. But she won’t be so confident in a few weeks’ time.

The immaculate grass courts of Wimbledon 2024 will level the playing field once more. Swiatek has never been past the quarter-final stage there.

What will happen at Wimbledon 2024? And will you be on the historic Centre Court at the All England Club to watch the extraordinary women’s tennis drama unfold?

They have been providing us with wonderful levels of entertainment in recent months. The showpiece at Wimbledon 2024 will be no different.
