Women’s tennis is every bit as thrilling as the men’s game. And you only have to look back at the merry month of May 2024 for further proof of this growing trend.
The Madrid final between Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka wasn’t just the best women’s match this year – it was the best tennis match – period!
But anyone who thought that kind of drama might be a one-off was happily mistaken. Naomi Osaka’s dramatic French Open contest against Swiatek at the end of May hit incredible heights yet again.
The women are packing as many thrills and spills into three sets as the men produce in five – and often even more emotion!
Women’s tennis will surely provide more highlights at Wimbledon 2024. If May was anything to go by, expect a succession of saved match points in massive July matches as Centre Court goes wild.
The semi-finals and final of the women’s tournament at Wimbledon could very well bring fresh tears of joy and despair. And the emotion on show is endearing and absorbing in equal measure.
At Roland Garros we witnessed the tears of Naomi Osaka. But they were quickly replaced by her sense of pride at being part of something so exquisite.
Even during the match, Andy Murray was telling the world to switch on to women’s tennis.
‘Osaka v Swiatek is a brilliant watch,’ he said with love hearts for eyes in his chosen emoji. ‘WTA need to do more to capitalise on these match-ups.’
Here at WDH we have been saying it for years: women’s tennis can often match the men’s game for drama and entertainment. Now more and more fans are coming to the same conclusion!
In Paris, Osaka had match point at 5-3 in the decider – before Iga bravely stormed back to win 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 7-5.
‘I thought I was out,’ Swiatek admitted. ‘I was on the edge and I cried after.’
Naomi’s tears were even more poignant. ‘I cried when I came off court but then I thought of how last year I was watching Iga win the French Open when I was pregnant.’
How can men come up with revelations like that? Fans love the human stories and the tears. After all, the heartbreak isn’t permanent.
Osaka soon admitted: ‘It was the most fun match I have ever played, the atmosphere was incredible.’
In Madrid, a similar story of Swiatek survival against the odds had unfolded. But in that fight, Iga had somehow saved three match points to take the title away from Sabalenka.
And the tie-break provided the perfect climax to a memorable showpiece, with Iga eventually taking the trophy 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7). By then the lucky crowd were almost drained by the drama!
