Brits Knocked Out of Roland Garros but Ready for Wimbledon 2024

Brits knocked out. It’s not so unusual to see it happen early at Grand Slams. But all of them? In the very first round?
That’s the way it has unfolded at Roland Garros. Six singles players, six defeats. A total of five sets won between them.
Brits won’t fall so easily at Wimbledon 2024 – we can be pretty sure of that. They have been brought up playing on grass. Others often fear the beautiful surface at the All England Club.
The Parisian clay has not been kind to British dreams this year. Andy Murray and Jack Draper were the early high-profile names to bite the dust.
Katie Boulter’s defeat late last night was arguably the most glorious, if losses can ever be described as such.
She was magnificent for long periods against the powerful Paula Badosa. In fact she was a set and a break up and almost into the home straight.
But the Spaniard fought back ferociously – and the final set was a marvellous spectacle. Sadly for the Brits, Boulter’s decision-making deserted her just when it mattered.
And that was it. The first-round run of reverses for Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie, Jack Draper, Harriet Dart, Dan Evans and Katie Boulter were complete. They had all fallen at the first hurdle.
Emma Raducanu hadn’t even come to the French Open, preferring to focus on her preparations for the grass court season. But that tells a story in itself.
Brits knocked out at Roland Garros could mean longer adventures for those same players at Wimbledon 2024.
Andy Murray will fight tooth and nail to survive as long as he can in the first week at his farewell major.
Jack Draper will be aiming for second-week action at the All England Club. Emma Raducanu has been there before – going on to win the US Open not long afterwards.
Katie Boulter has delighted Centre Court with runs to the third round at recent Championships.
It’s not all doom and gloom for the British players, Their time is coming at Wimbledon 2024.
We’re not saying a Brit is going to win Wimbledon 2024 – although one day that ought to be possible for young guns Draper and Raducanu.
The encouraging thing is that all seven of those British players can start to focus on the forthcoming drama at the All England Club earlier than normal. And extra preparation can only do them good.
