Jannik Sinner Is Outstanding Miami Winner, Beating Dimitrov
Locker Room
April 1, 2024
Jannik Sinner hit shots from the tennis gods to leave Miami open-mouthed in admiration.
His 6-3, 6-1 demolition of a superb opponent was almost superhuman.
Sinner is the new world number two. Could he be world number one by the time we all reach Wimbledon 2024? He’s certainly playing better than anyone else on the tour right now.
And there’s only one thought in the heads of most tennis experts and fans in England.
Jannik Sinner only needs to translate this extraordinary level onto grass and he will become champion of Wimbledon 2024 as well!
As so often happens in tennis, the earliest signs did not hint at such magnificence for the rest of the contest in this memorable final.
Grigor Dimitrov had the better start – and could have broken to go 3-1 up with a first-set forehand.
The Bulgarian’s effort flew fractionally wide – and that turned out to be the match right there.
The veteran was virtually a spectator to the twenty-two-year-old Italian’s sheer brilliance from that point on.
In fact, what unfolded was more astonishing than that. Dimitrov didn’t play badly – and repeatedly forced his way into winning positions in rallies.
But each time his excellence proved futile. No matter what Grigor did, Sinner found an answer.
Jannik conjured impossible winners while stretching deep into the corners to make forehands he simply didn’t have the right to reach.
Jamie Delgado, Andy Murray’s old coach and now Dimitrov’s mentor, shrugged his shoulders in disbelief.
Elsewhere around the arena there was a more delighted sense of wonder that any human being could crush an opponent with such a sparkling array of winners – and such an astonishing display of movement.
Dimitrov was warm in his congratulations at the net when all was said and done. He seemed to suggest that no one could have beaten Jannik on his form.
Sinner commented: ‘It’s been a very special week for me. I have faced different kinds of situations on the court and different opponents.
‘I was full of energy today and I am very happy to be number two in the world.’
But Jannik Sinner won’t stop there. He knows he is the best this year.
