Iga Swiatek doubled up in delight after a spontaneous backhand smash sealed the deal in Doha.
It was her third successive triumph on this happy hunting ground – but she celebrated as if it was the first time.
‘So, so happy!’ Iga tweeted as soon as she could. ‘Thank you Team!’
Iga Swiatek must be wondering if she can replicate this winning feeling at Wimbledon 2024!
Swiatek rarely loses a final once she gets there – although it looked as though she would succumb in the first set of this particular showpiece at the very least.
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina was 4-1 up and enjoying the luxury of a double break. And even when the world number one struck back, she still had to save a set point.
After winning an epic tie-break, however, the valiant Pole took full control.
It didn’t seem to matter how sweetly Rybakina hit the ball – or how many times she looked likely to win a key exchange.
Swiatkek was always there, staying in the rally with amazing defence and wearing down her taller opponent in the war of attrition.
Eventually Iga triumphed 7-6 (10-8), 6-2 to spark joyous celebrations among the fanatical Polish contingent in the crowd.

After all, Swiatek has to be successful at the spiritual home of tennis sooner or later.
She is the best player on the planet. She is a former Junior Wimbledon champion. It’s surely only a matter of time before she joins the illustrious list of women’s singles winners at the All England Club.
Iga clearly has her appetite back for the big occasion. You could tell how much she enjoyed this victory from the way she celebrated with her team.
Long may it continue. She deserves to experience that ultimate satisfaction at Wimbledon one day.
