Iga Swiatek Knocked Out, Cameron Norrie Storms Through

Iga Swiatek has been knocked out of the Australian Open by a little-known nineteen-year-old called Linda Noskova.
‘I’m shaking right now, I don’t know what I’ll do in the next hour. I went in feeling I had nothing to lose and that helped,’ said the world number fifty.
Iga Swiatek will now dust herself down and come back strong for the French Open and Wimbledon 2024.
And there is no reason why the world number one can’t triumph on clay and on grass.
She was enjoying a seventeen-match unbeaten run until Noskova came from behind to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Melbourne.
The Czech hasn’t just suddenly come from nowhere. She reached the semi-finals in Brisbane. But this result is still a major shock against the best player in women’s tennis, who last lost in September.
And Swiatek’s departure surely increases the chances of glory for the USA’s Coco Gauff – although Aryna Sabalenka and a few others might have something to say about that.
Meanwhile there was a surprise in the men’s tournament too, when Britain’s Cameron Norrie defeated the Norwegian eleventh seed, Casper Ruud.
Norrie is into the last sixteen of the Australian Open for the first time.
Cam looked like he’d blown it when he squandered two set points in the second-set tie-break and saw a 5-2 lead slip away.
But Norrie is made of tough stuff and he simply went about asserting his domination afresh until he won through 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-3.
Ruud had an off-day. But that was also partly due to Norrie’s astonishing confidence in all areas.
Iga Swiatek and Cameron Norrie will both make for intriguing viewing at Wimbledon 2024.
Both are capable of going all the way. But interestingly, you never quite know what you’re going to get with either player.
