Andy Murray went into this big-name showdown with the same, fierce will to win he takes into a Grand Slam event.

And he is determined to savour every occasion this summer – and play every match as though it could be his last.

His match against Gael Monfils was a chance to stay sharp with the French Open approaching.
But make no mistake, Wimbledon 2023 will be his big target in the next few months.
For now it’s the clay court surface Murray has to master. And he conjured a magical array of shots to take down one of the most athletic players tennis has ever seen.
Deadly drop-shots had Monfils scrambling for the net. Then Andy pounced to send the ball beyond the famous Frenchman.
Although both men saw their serves broken early on, it was Murray who soon took control and never looked back.
Always an intelligent player, Andy managed to break down Gael’s backhand on several occasions – and that also proved decisive.
The super Brit beat Monfils 6-3, 6-2 at this ATP Challenger Tour 175 event at Aix-en-Provence.
There will be bigger stages before Murray finally calls time on his illustrious career.
Andy Murray on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2023 will be something to treasure.
For now, he was just happy to be back on track. He explained: ‘I’m glad to be back on the court competing again at a high level.
‘I’m hoping to get some more matches here – and keep building to get ready for Roland Garros.’
Andy will meet another Frenchman – Laurent Lokoli – in the next round as he seeks to improve with every European summer match.
But for Murray and Monfils – two tennis legends – this was also about doing battle one last time.
Andy added: ‘Gael was a very tough opponent to get in the first round. It’s not easy, especially at our age, we’re not young anymore.
‘He has been a good friend of mine on tour. I think we first played each other twenty-five years ago, when we were eleven or twelve years old.’
