Dan Evans defeated Andy Murray but the Battle of the Brits experience offered encouraging signs for both players.

Feisty Evans will have loved beating the more celebrated Scot in his own back yard.

Yet Andy Murray beat Jack Draper earlier in the week to show that he is ready for a sparkling 2023 if he stays free of injury.

Dan Evans and Andy Murray showing their very best fighting spirit at Wimbledon 2023. Wouldn’t that be great?

“Evo” edged out Murray 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in the most memorable result of the final day.

Yet there was a poignant final match when Andy and his brother Jamie took some kind of revenge over Evans and his doubles partner Neal Skupski to win 6-3, 6-4.

That made no difference to the overall outcome, which was an 8-4 victory for England over Scotland.

But it was a significant contest just the same, if you are one of those tennis fans who cherishes every last moment that Wimbledon winners spend on court together.

Andy of course has won the singles twice at the All England Club. Jamie has enjoyed similar glory in the Wimbledon mixed doubles.

These brothers are total legends of British tennis. And Sir Andy acknowledged that it could have been the last time they fight and win together.

‘I certainly hope it’s not the case but we need to treat these moments like we might not get an opportunity again. We’re getting on a bit and you never know what’s round the corner,’ Andy said.

He has often admitted that he is only one more serious injury away from retirement.

And yet Andy Murray’s stunning success over Jack Draper at this event also proved that he can mix it with brilliant young players and still come out on top.

He won that classic 6-2, 1-6, 12-10 to show us all that he still means business.

And to beat such a dangerous Andy Murray is a feather in the cap of Dan Evans.

Now they will gear up for the Australian Open. But there is one Grand Slam where Andy Murray dearly wants to leave another lasting memory.

Andy Murray would love to go deep and finish in style at Wimbledon 2023!

Make sure you see Evans and Murray at their home Slam before it’s too late!
