Frances Tiafoe Stuns Rafael Nadal And Coco Prepares
US Open
September 6, 2022
Frances Tiafoe and Coco Gauff are making it a memorable US Open for the Americans in New York.
And last night it was Tiafoe who overpowered one of the tournament favourites, Rafael Nadal.
Gauff, meanwhile, is preparing for her quarter-final against the dangerous Caroline Garcia.
Frances Tiafoe and Coco Gauff are two reasons why Wimbledon 2023 will be special for American spectators.
The All England Club has always warmly welcomed our friends from across the pond. And now US tennis is experiencing a next-generation resurgence.
Few expected Tiafoe to defeat the great Nadal, who hadn’t lost a Grand Slam match all year.
But the power and fizz in that Tiafoe forehand was complimented by a sharp brain and some subtle drop-shots.
Above all, Tiafoe showed wonderful composure on the big occasion as he triumphed 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
And that makes him a new contender for the US Open title in front of his home crowd.
As for Rafael Nadal, all seems less than well both on and off the court.
He seemed to lack his usual supercharged fitness – and let’s not forget that injury forced him out of Wimbledon a few weeks ago.
Then there are family issues to consider, because his wife is expecting their first child back in Mallorca.
‘I need to go back,’ Rafa explained. ‘I need to fix things, life, then I don’t know when I’m going to come back.
‘I’m going to try to be ready mentally. When I feel that I’m ready to compete again, I’ll be there.’
And we can be confident Rafael Nadal will be back to his best for Wimbledon 2023.
Coco Gauff, who first exploded onto the Wimbledon scene as a 15-year-old back in 2019, will surely be at her best next summer too.
She is still a teenager, of course. But now it seems almost normal for Coco to be reaching the business end of Grand Slams.
Come and watch Frances Tiafoe and Coco Gauff at the greatest Grand Slam of them all – Wimbledon 2023!
