Super Novak Djokovic Captures His Seventh Wimbledon Title

Wimbledon

July 10, 2022

Novak Djokovic made Nick Kyrgios his 28th successive Wimbledon victim with a typically deadly performance in the final.

The super Serb has taken four Wimbledon titles in a row and seven in all. That makes him a true master of his craft on grass.

No wonder Novak Djokovic loves Wimbledon Centre Court like no other!

He explained: ‘Every year it gets more meaningful. I am really blessed. The most special court in the world.’

Kyrgios couldn’t argue with the supreme skill Djokovic displayed when it mattered.

‘He’s a bit of a god, I’m not going to lie. I thought I played well,’ said Nick. And that just about sums it all up.

Only Roger Federer has won more Wimbledon men’s singles titles in the Open era now.

But Djokovic has passed Federer for overall Grand Slam titles and stands just one behind Rafael Nadal in the race for all-time greatness.

Kyrgios looked capable of pulling off an upset and pegging Novak back in his first major final. But he couldn’t maintain his early momentum.

Novak Djokovic settled down and played beautiful tennis to command the Wimbledon 2022 final from there.

And in the tie-break that proved to be the clincher, it was perhaps predictable that the Australian unravelled slightly under the immense pressure.

The 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) victory for Djokovic was probably decided even more crucially by that infamous Kyrgios temperament in the third.

There were complaints to the umpire about a spectator he claimed was drunk and bothering him. But it was Kyrgios who was soon punished for an audible obscenity.

And Nick seemed to think the entire world – including his own box – was against him as that pivotal set progressed.

Kyrgios played better in the fourth and it would have been lovely to see the match go to five sets.

Then we might have wondered whether the 27-year-old could finally find the magic to grind down his formidable adversary.

After all, it was underdog Kyrgios who had actually beaten Djokovic twice before. And Novak had never defeated the younger man until now.

But that’s Djokovic all over. He rises to the big occasion with his beautifully balanced and seemingly effortless precision.

Nick Kyrgios has undoubtedly contributed massively to this wonderful Wimbledon.

And it was a final truly fitting of Centre Court’s historic Centenary Year.

If Kyrgios makes it this far again next year, he might just learn from his maiden showpiece and take the title at last.
