Cameron Norrie could hardly speak after reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon 2022.
He was almost overwhelmed with emotion after defeating David Goffin in five gruelling sets on No1 Court.
But his semi-final opponent, Novak Djokovic had also been forced to play five sets. He was even two down before storming back to beat Jannik Sinner.
Cameron Norrie is not afraid of playing Novak Djokovic for a place in the Wimbledon 2022 final.
He said: ‘It’s only going to get tougher from here. But I’m going to take it to Novak Djokovic and hopefully you guys can get behind me. I’m looking forward to it.’
One thing is for sure. The crowd will mostly be on Norrie’s side, just as he foresees.
They cheered their new British hero to the rafters every time he edged a point closer to victory.
He seemed momentarily unsettled when they reacted with gasps at a failed first serve as he neared glory.
But that support still carried Cameron through to the big-time Djokovic clash.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge couldn’t hide their excitement and delight at the outcome.
On these occasions their presence only adds to the glamour. But William and Kate are also there to enjoy the spectacle and a chance to be be part of an enthusiastic crowd.
Norrie benefited from everyone’s support – royals included. He rode the wave of love from the stands and he didn’t disappoint.
Cam said: ‘I’m speechless. It wasn’t going well for me early on, I wasn’t feeling my way through. But the crowd got behind me and I managed to get over the line.’
For long periods of this epic it seemed that Belgian Goffin knew too much and moved too well.
But the final score-line also reflects how Norrie worked out where he was going wrong and refused to give up until he had turned the tide.
They might even have heard the final cheers in central London as Norrie closed out for his dramatic 3-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory.
By then Goffin had the air of a man who could match Norrie’s skill but not his sheer determination.
Now Novak Djokovic awaits in the Wimbledon 2022 semi-final.
These Championships have had everything in Centre Court’s Centenary Year.
So it is fitting that a Brit is about to take on one of the greatest players of all time for a coveted place in the Wimbledon 2022 final.
