Alfie Hewett And Gordon Reid Create History, Shuker So Close!
Australian Open
January 27, 2022
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid made incredible history for Britain at the Australian Open.
They won their ninth consecutive Grand Slam title in the wheelchair doubles.
Meanwhile Lucy Shuker, who has had links with Wimbledon Debenture Holders for a good number of years, came so close to winning the women’s doubles.
We look forward to welcoming all our wheelchair stars to Wimbledon 2022!
Shuker and Japanese partner Yui Kamiji almost defeated heavy favourites Diede De Groot and Aniek Van Koot of the Nethelands. But the Dutch pair finally edged it 7-5, 3-6, 10-2.
Nevertheless it was a great Australian Open for Shuker and did her rankings no harm whatsoever. She also made the singles semi-finals before losing to Van Koot, so Lucy has plenty of reasons to feel proud.
The glory went to Hewett and Reid, however, as it so often does.
The Brits are a phenomenon and their consistency has been a joy.
To win nine Grand Slam titles in a row is a truly astounding achievement.
But it was a very close-run thing before they triumphed 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 over Argentina’s Gustavo Fernandez and Shingo Kunieda of Japan.
Alfie Hewett understandably had little left in the tank for his singles final against world number one Kunieda but he put up a wonderful fight.
Kunieda took that title 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 but a drained Hewett still has plenty to celebrate after all his Grand Slam exertions.
Meanwhile there was no dream ending for Aussie hero Dylan Alcott who fell 7-5, 6-0 to Dutch star Sam Schroeder in the Quads. But what an inspirational career Alcott can look back upon as he goes into retirement!
There is no doubt that Reid and Hewett will also go down in history now. Will there ever be a greater wheelchair doubles pairing?
Come and watch some of the wheelchair tennis action at Wimbledon 2022 and you’ll be amazed!
