Cameron Norrie Shines To Reach Quarter-Finals At Indian Wells
Indian Wells
October 14, 2021
Cameron Norrie will play against Diego Schwartzman this evening in the Indian Wells quarter-finals.
The super-Brit defeated American crowd favourite Tommy Paul to reach a new milestone.
Ecstatic Norrie has made the last eight of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time in his career.
He has also drawn level with the great Novak Djokovic on 44 wins in 2021.
And if he carries on like this, Cam could soon be in the top twenty and knock Dan Evans off his perch as British number one.
Cameron Norrie and his continued rise are great news for Wimbledon 2022 because fans have yet another British hero to cheer!
And the funny thing is, Norrie doesn’t even think he is playing his best tennis yet.
So imagine how good he will become by next summer!
True, Cam dropped a set against the feisty Tommy Paul and his serve looked vulnerable at times.
But he also wore his opponent down with punishing rallies and searing winners.
And Norrie closed out his 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory with a beautiful ace out wide.
He put his victory down to improved composure under pressure.
Norrie explained modestly: ‘It was tough. I managed to sneak through. I managed not to get too down. I’m not playing my best but I’m fighting hard.
‘Tommy is a tricky player. I tried to stay tough when I played a poor game. He gave me a few freebies at the end.
‘After four years on tour I’m more mature handling the bigger moments now. And I’m happy to be through such a scrappy match like today.
‘I will need to rest my legs and get ready to run again.’
Schwartzman is a formidable customer but that won’t scare Norrie.
The Argentine proved too much for Brit number one Dan Evans in Cincinnati earlier this year.
But if Norrie hits top form at just the right time, he could progress even further.
In a year when we have seen Emma Raducanu emerge in spectacular style and the great Andy Murray sparkle once more, Brit tennis fans have another star to enjoy.
Wimbledon 2022 will surely provide untold sporting riches and home-grown heroes galore.
