Andy Murray Thrills Again On Grass With Perfect Timing!
Wimbledon
June 16, 2021
Andy Murray winning on grass is one of the great sights of the British summer.
How we had missed it these last three years!
But not as much as Murray himself, judging by the way he had to fight back the tears after his 6-3, 6-2 win over Benoit Paire.
It only took a simple question about how it felt to be competing again.
‘Yeah, look I love it, I love playing tennis…erm…sorry.’
The Murray voice was wobbling even before he said the word tennis. The tears were in his long-suffering eyes.
Imagine the emotion Murray will feel stepping out on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2021!
Andy’s reaction came in front of a thin but enthusiastic crowd at Queen’s after his game looked impressive against the eccentric Frenchman.
Murray served well and didn’t face a single break point. More importantly he moved well and raced to reach drop-shots with a reassuring fluency.
He didn’t feel any unpleasant reaction around the hip or groin. He’s back and it’s such a joy and such a relief, both for the player and his millions of fans!
And now quite rightly Murray believes he can make a mark at Wimbledon.
Remember Centre Court and No1 Court will have 50 per cent crowd capacity from the start and the finals will see that move up to 100 per cent capacity!
How Murray will love to hear the cheers of Centre Court again. What an emotional experience it will be.
And if he cries once more at the sheer thrill of it all, we will probably cry with him.
Let’s face it, we all love Andy Murray. That’s why he has won BBC Sports Personality of the Year an incredible three times!
He transcends tennis. Sir Andy is a loveable gentleman.
Everyone wants to see Murray do well at Wimbledon. Everyone wants to be there to cheer him on.
This warm-up match at Queen’s was the perfect start. Just 64 minutes of brilliance but he did manage to fire 20 winners.
He will have to raise his game even further next time out. And it seems a little unfair that he will face the might of Matteo Berrettini so soon.
Murray won’t put undue pressure on himself just yet. With the tears after victory came humour and realism too.
He commented: ‘The body is old but I did quite well today in terms of my movement. It’s my first match on grass in three years and I’ve only played three or four practice sets in the build-up to this, so I didn’t know exactly how I was going to play or feel but I think for a first match it was good.
‘Berrettini is obviously a top player, top seed here. He had a really strong French Open and I need to play one level up from today if I want to do well there.’
Andy Murray is capable of that. He has won Wimbledon twice.
The magic is still there. The passion is strong. He just loves to compete!
Come and watch Murray at Wimbledon 2021. It could be our last chance to share Andy’s cheers and tears.
