Brit Joe Salisbury Wins Roland Garros!
Roland Garros
June 10, 2021
Super Brit Joe Salisbury has won the mixed doubles at Roland Garros.
No wonder he described the experience as incredible after closing out with a subtle volley.
Salisbury is the unsung hero of British tennis and could take a title at Wimbledon 2021!
He won the Australian Open doubles in 2020 with Rajeev Ram.
Now he has won the French Open with his partner Desirae Krawczyk.
The American has now helped Salisbury make British tennis history.
The last Briton to win one of the five main events at Roland Garros was John Lloyd, who partnered the Australian Wendy Turnbull back in 1982.
And Salisbury knew he was up against it when he and Krawczyk dropped the first set and fell behind in the second.
It looked as though they might get destroyed by Russian pair Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev.
But stubborn Salisbury and the plucky American dug deep and found extraordinary rewards to clinch the title 2-6, 6-4,10-5.
They were so strong mentally in that super-breaker when it really mattered.
After a warm embrace and the chance to calm down for the trophy presentation ceremony, an ecstatic Salisbury was ready to collect his thoughts.
He said modestly: ‘It’s been incredible and so much fun, I don’t think we expected this and thank you Desirae for carrying me.
‘To our team, everybody here and back home, you guys are amazing and thank you so much for your support.
‘It’s been amazing playing in front of a crowd again, thank you so much and see you soon.’
Now Wimbledon 2021 will very much be on Joe Salisbury’s mind. He could even win two titles there!
The Wimbledon crowd will be right behind him!
We often forget Joe Salisbury due to the high profile and consistent success of fellow Brit Jamie Murray.
But if British fans doubt for a second that they have genuine title contenders at Wimbledon 2021, think again!
