Roger Federer Sparkles In Paris

Roland Garros

May 31, 2021

Resurgent Roger Federer gave a master class at Roland Garros to see off the dangerous Denis Istomin in straight sets.

And now we can’t wait for the chance to see Federer shine at Wimbledon 2021.

All the old grace and trickery were there as Roger showed that he can still defy time.

And wouldn’t we love to see the great man win one last Grand Slam at Wimbledon?

No one is seriously suggesting that Federer can win Roland Garros – not even the Swiss genius himself.

But the more matches he plays, the sharper he will become for his favourite surface – grass.

And that makes him a genuine contender for Wimbledon glory.

Roger displayed exquisite footwork and anticipation against Istomin. He wasn’t afraid to go to the net and show his usual versatility.

Crucially he also rifled down a series of stunning aces to create a firm foundation for his scintillating game.

Federer said afterwards: ‘I served very well and I felt flexible. It’s great to be back and a real pleasure to see you again after so much rehabilitation and training.’

The Roland Garros crowd roared enthusiastically when they heard this from the world’s favourite sportsman.

So just imagine what the reaction will be on Wimbledon’s Centre Court when Federer conjures his magic in just a few weeks’ time!

It’s going to be an emotional occasion – not least because we expect this to be Federer’s last title tilt at his favourite Slam.

Indeed it has been two years since he played Roland Garros and 487 days since he took part in a Slam.

But you wouldn’t have known it as he cruised through 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 in spectacular style.

At one stage Federer’s first-serve percentage was an extraordinary 95 per cent.

In all his 71 wins at Roland Garros, his service action could hardly have looked smoother.

Of course his all-round game can improve further still and there will be tougher challenges this week in Paris.

But the more competitive action he gets after so long out, the better it will be for Wimbledon.

To see Federer back at Wimbledon will be a dream come true. The crowd will go wild.

And British fans have an improving star of their own to cheer in Cameron Norrie.

He has been winning matches for fun on clay this year and the USA’s Bjorn Fratangelo was his latest victim.

Norrie overcame a tough start to triumph 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Wimbledon fans will soon be roaring on Norrie and Dan Evans as well as the iconic Andy Murray.

Meanwhile Jo Konta will be looking for fresh momentum on grass after she came off second best in a battle against the experienced Sorana Cristea. Heather Watson was also edged out at Roland Garros by Zarina Diyas but will be ready to fight again at Wimbledon.

Will you be there to see Federer and the Brits thrill Wimbledon once more?

We can make that dream come true.

And British spectators will give him a warm welcome too. Particularly after his glowing praise for the improving Cameron Norrie.
