Jannik Sinner on the Verge of Emulating the Great Roger Federer

Locker Room

March 28, 2026

Jannik Sinner served like a dream to emerge from a tense encounter with Sascha Zverev relatively untroubled.

He served no fewer than fifteen aces to win 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in yet another master class of poise and ruthlessness.

It wasn’t perfection – even though Jannik often comes across as a winning machine.

The Italian appeared to tweak an ankle at one point. He even hit himself on the knee with his racquet while executing a routine shot. Reminders this tennis giant is only human after all.

However, a growing unbeaten record of 32 sets on the bounce at Masters 1000 tournaments would suggest something almost superhuman about Sinner’s ability to prevail.

Jannik Sinner will arrive at Wimbledon 2026 as reigning champion. A sporting phenomenon who has to be seen at close quarters to be believed.

He creates palpable unease in his adversaries. They know that only something extraordinary will win them so much as a point.

That pressure leads to mistakes – even when a cool confidence might actually have carried the day.

Therefore the problems caused by Zverev were also solved by the German, from his opponent’s point of view.

In the biggest moments, when he looked capable of breaking, Sascha made unforced errors. Sinner wasn’t about to offer up many second chances.

Jannik Sinner is now one step from the first Sunshine Double in the men’s game since another Wimbledon hero, Roger Federer achieved the feat back in 2017.

To win Indian Wells and Miami in the same month would be to show sheer brilliance over a sustained and intensive period in the tennis calendar.

First Jannik must overcome the tricky Jiri Lehecka, who saw off flamboyant Frenchman Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-2 in the other semi-final.

But this is Lehecka’s maiden Masters 1000 showpiece – and Sinner’s experience and consistency should carry the day.

With tennis so unpredictable, however, Jannik could only safely reflect on what he had just achieved.

Sinner said: ‘I served very well – especially in the crucial moments. I’m very happy and it means a lot to me.’

Jannik Sinner’s opportunity to defend his title at Wimbledon 2026 will mean a lot to him too.
