Jack Draper and Sonay Kartal Win the Hard Way in Indian Wells
Indian Wells
March 8, 2026
Jack Draper shook off the ring rust against a former Wimbledon semi-finalist – and showed flashes of what made him Indian Wells champion last year.
The likeable Englishman knew his performance had been patchy against Roberto Bautista Agut. He lost the plot slightly in the second half of the first set.
But for the rest of the match we saw more of what made Draper the surprise title winner at Indian Wells twelve months ago.
Jack Draper hinted at the level of entertainment we can expect from the British favourite at Wimbledon 2026!
The explosive second game of the second set, his pivotal break sealed with a searing backhand bullet, reminded us of Jack’s potential.
His 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory sets up a clash with Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo in the round of 32. Another chance for the passionate Brit to improve his match fitness.
Draper explained: ‘These wins are massive for me – especially on my return to the tour. Hopefully I can keep on progressing from here with how I want to play.
‘The injury I had wasn’t like a couple of weeks. It was eight months. I missed so much competitive tennis and I do feel that. I feel a little bit off.
‘I’m definitely a bit in and out with my consistency. But I think that’s going to come. I was coming out today against a really formidable opponent.’
Draper was in good company in needing to come from behind to achieve victory.
Novak Djokovic started poorly – but bounced back to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 against Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak.
But one of the most dramatic performances of the day came from another Brit, Sonay Kartal.
She defeated the talented American, Emma Navarro 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) in a real thriller.
And the 24-year-old faces an even bigger American name in California next – Madison Keys.
Jack Draper and Sonay Kartal will have every chance to go deep at Wimbledon 2026 – and create an unforgettable atmosphere on historic Centre Court.
