Carlos Alcaraz Coach Eyes Calendar Slam Before Dimitrov Opener

Indian Wells

March 6, 2026

Carlos Alcaraz will try for a Calendar Slam this year!

It’s a feat that evaded the great Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

The Spaniard’s new coach Samuel Lopez wasn’t scared to mention the elusive Calendar Slam – only weeks after Alcaraz sealed a Career Slam in Australia.

Carlos Alcaraz would need to win Wimbledon 2026 in between Roland Garros and the US Open to seal the historic deal this year.

But before he can start adding to his tally of majors, Carlitos faces a potential banana skin at Indian Wells.

Alcaraz faces the brilliant Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in the round of 64 in the American desert.

Although Dimitrov has dropped down to world number 42 and is almost 35 years old, he is still capable of scaring anyone on his day.

And we know from experience what daily drama Indian Wells will bring us in the days to come.

Tonight Emma Raducanu will aim to get back to winning ways in her opener against Anastasia Zakharova.

Emma has added her former coach Mark Petchey to her camp for the tournament as she looks to rediscover the old essence of her game.

But it is the coach of the world number one who has captured the imagination as the season hots up in California.

Samuel Lopez said: ‘In pre-season, Carlos showed total commitment and a positive attitude at all times – willing to listen and accept help.

‘The challenge would be to win all four Grand Slams this year. It’s ambitious – but possible.’

Only Don Budge and Rod Laver have ever achieved Calendar Slams. None of the modern greats managed more than three majors in a single calendar year in the men’s game.

Carlos Alcaraz winning Wimbledon 2026 would take on extra meaning if he has already bagged Roland Garros by then.

He would only need to triumph at Flushing Meadows to cement his place as one of the greatest of all time.
