Cameron Norrie Will Face Sascha Zverev as the Last Brit Standing
Australian Open
January 21, 2026
Cameron Norrie will try to reverse the recent Grand Slam trend against Alexander Zverev when they face off in round three at the Australian Open.
It’ll be a tall order for journeyman Norrie when he takes on last year’s Aussie Open runner-up on Friday.
The German prevailed in a Melbourne classic two years ago. And then at Wimbledon that English summer, Zverev ruthlessly thwarted Cam’s revenge attempt.
But feisty Norrie doesn’t mind being the underdog again. And with his opponent already complaining of Achilles tendon issues, you wonder whether this might just be Cam’s time to take advantage.
British fans will have to live in hope, after Emma Raducanu and Arthur Fery fell at the second hurdle Down Under. Now Norrie is left to fly the flag alone at the Australian Open.
Cameron Norrie will expect some of his compatriots to go further with him at Wimbledon 2026 this summer.
But for now he must be delighted with the way he held his nerve in his rain-affected second round nerve-jangler in Melbourne.
Norrie had to wait an hour before he could polish off the final three points to close out the fourth-set tie-break against Emilio Nava.
And Cam will feel pleased his match didn’t turn into even more of a marathon on court. When he fell 0-3 behind in the second set, it appeared a tough day at the office was looming.
But Norrie’s 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory was no more than he deserved for his persistence and determination.
Now a mouth-watering opportunity awaits against Zverev, who had to take a medical time-out before beating France’s Alexandre Muller 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Friday’s protagonists will feel relatively satisfied with the form that has brought them this far.
Cameron Norrie and Sascha Zverev will both hope to go even deeper at Wimbledon 2026.

Cam was two matches from winning the biggest title at the All England Club in 2022. There’s still time.
Last year Zverev came even closer to Grand Slam glory in Melbourne. Cam would love to shatter Sascha’s fresh dreams of a first major in Australia.
