Novak Djokovic was typically gracious in defeat. ‘You deserve it,’ the tennis legend told unknown Valentin Vacherot at the net.
The great warrior may be running out of important gladiatorial moments in his sparkling career, as we edge towards the end of the year.
Novak Djokovic might just be tempted to play Wimbledon 2026 and see if he can go deep one last time.
But his body isn’t necessarily on his side as consistently as it used it be. The spirit is of course always willing.
Novak didn’t want to dwell on the hip injury that had all but handed the man from Monaco his 6-3, 6-4 victory. He knew this had to be the greatest moment in the underdog’s sporting life.
For a start, the $590,000 prize money for reaching the Shanghai final was more than Vacherot had earned in his entire career up to this point.
The 26-year-old could even win the prestigious title on Sunday. He would have to beat his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech to do so.
But whatever happens for the rest of the weekend, Valentin can say he beat the greatest player of all time in a massive match.
And some of his tennis was sublime. Looping forehand winners, 211 kmph aces and stubborn, self-assured rallies characterised the closing games.
‘I’m trying to pinch myself. Is this real?’ The winner could forgive himself for thinking it was all a dream.
Vacherot added: ‘To have Novak on the other side of the court was first of all an invaluable experience for me. I have a hundred feelings right now.’
Djokovic was generous. He said: ‘I want to congratulate Valentin for reaching his first Masters final. Going from qualifications, it’s an amazing story. It’s all about him – and the better player won.’
Maybe so, but Djokovic had a medical time-out and lengthy massage midway through the first set. He has struggled for most of the tournament.
There was a glorious moment shortly before his fate was sealed, when the brilliant Serb won a classic rally by reaching an impossible diagonal to stay in the fight.
How the crowd roared as Novak cupped his ear to milk their applause. He made a love heart sign to his adoring audience as he said goodbye.
Perhaps not even Djokovic knows how long he can carry on. But we would love to see him back in London next year.
Novak Djokovic on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2026 would be a wonderful stage to bid farewell to one of the greatest sportsmen the world has ever seen.
