Jannik Sinner and Naomi Osaka Look Like US Open Winners
US Open
September 2, 2025
Jannik Sinner and Naomi Osaka both know what it takes to win the US Open title.
The Italian is defending champion. The Japanese star has won the tournament twice before at Flushing Meadows.
Both are in such irresistible form that it’s hard to see anyone else’s names on the singles trophies this year.
Jannik Sinner and Naomi Osaka are showing unparalleled ruthlessness right now. They look like champions-in-waiting.
Carlos Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek might have something to say about that. And Grand Slam tennis is notoriously unpredictable.
But the hard courts aren’t great levellers like grass courts can be. These two simply love the reliability of the surface they’re on right now.
Sinner and Osaka won’t be sure-fire winners at Wimbledon 2026. Naomi has never yet reached the business end at the All England Club.
But when Osaka reaches the quarters in New York, historically she goes on to win. And Sinner has reached a standard so stratospheric that he now leaves opponents in awe.
That’s what happened when he beat the normally-dangerous Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in just 81 minutes.
The Kazakh told Sinner at the net: ‘You’re so good. This is insane. You’re an AI-generated player.’
It’s not Sinner’s fault he sounds so robotic in his speech too – particularly when English isn’t his first language. But the lack of emotion probably only adds to the intimidating aura.
Jannik said simply: ‘I felt like today I was playing some great tennis. I managed to break him very early. This gave me the confidence to serve a little bit better. And play from the back of the court a bit better.’
Jannik Sinner and Naomi Osaka now have a momentum that could be hard to stop in New York.
Osaka took down past champion Coco Gauff in such emphatic style that you wondered what she might do next.
The 2018 and 2020 champion swept Coco aside 6-3, 6-2 in just 64 minutes of pulsating power.
Gauff won just six points on Osaka’s serve all match. She threw in 33 unforced errors to seal her own fate but insisted: ‘I won’t let this crush me.’
Naomi was kind to the young woman she had defeated so resoundingly. She said: ‘Coco is one of the best players in the world. I have the most fun when I play against the best players.
‘These are the moments that I play tennis for.’
Osaka is a mood player. And she is definitely in the mood to win the US Open. Are you in the mood to come to London next summer?
