Alexander Zverev Falls to Felix Auger-Aliassime at US Open
US Open
August 31, 2025
Alexander Zverev was third seed. He so nearly won this tournament five years ago. Yet again he has fallen short.
Alexander Zverev often divides opinion. Some will feel sorry for him. Others will just shake their heads, unsurprised at his latest failure.
The German was criticised for his patronising remark when British opponent Jacob Fearnley found some late brilliance in his last match.
‘Where did that come from?’ Zverev asked, as though Fearnley wasn’t good enough to mount a sustained and serious challenge to his own excellence.
Now “Sascha” Zverev can ask the same question to the amazing Canadian. Because the match favourite was totally humbled by the twenty-fifth seed and his sizzling range of powerful forehands.
Felix Auger-Aliassime crushed Zverev – even though the taller man only had to win one more point to go two sets ahead.
How the wasteful Sascha will regret that squandered opportunity now.
At 28, he has been in the final of three Grand Slams – and come up short every time. The best player never to win a major. He still has a few more chances before time passes him by and that description sticks forever.
Alexander Zverev and his booming serve will be a threat to anyone at Wimbledon 2026 next summer.
But for now the Canadians are celebrating Felix and his stunning comeback win by a very entertaining 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 6-4.
Auger-Aliassime knows that time is still on his side in his quest to break through to the very highest level.
Felix said: ‘This feels good. I’ve been coming here since 2018. I’m still young. But it has been a few years and I’m working my way. I think I’d be a fool not to use this win for confidence.’
And why shouldn’t he ride to the wave to swamp Andrey Rublev too in the round of 16? That should be a cracker.
But the most fascinating confrontation at this stage could be Jannik Sinner against Alexander Bublik. On his day, Bublik can beat anyone – as we just saw with his marathon victory over a weary Tommy Paul.
Sinner will have to be on his A-game to continue to defend his title in style. And the quality of the matches will just get better and better from this point.
Alexander Zverev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Bublik are all likely to thrill us with their exploits at Wimbledon 2026.
We can’t wait for the biggest Slam of them all. How about you? Coming to Wimbledon 2026? The Championships are like no other in the world.
